THE KNITTED BIBLE

Over the five days that the Knitted Bible was with us in Crook, seven classes of local school children, together with Brownies and Guides, members of the church and other local churches as well as people from the town all found their way to St Andrew's Dawson Street to discover the Bible as it's never been known before.

The Knitted Bible began as a project at St George's United Reformed Church, Hartlepool. One Christmas a modest knitted nativity scene appeared in church: people liked it, and someone suggested that they might knit a scene to tell the Easter story. This was such a success that they then began to knit the whole Passiontide story - and that year made the teatime news on Tyne Tees Television on Easter Day.

By now everyone in the congregation was involved in some way, and the project became the Knitted Bible - nearly 50 tableaux depicting the best-known Bible stories, from Old and New Testaments. As well as sharing all of this with local schools in Hartlepool, the church had a time for open viewing over the summers of 2008 and 2009. And it was then that we at St Andrew's Dawson Street suggested that maybe the Knitted Bible ought to go on tour!

And so the Knitted Bible came to our church. Over the week beginning March 14th many of Crook's children had the opportunity to see the exhibition and hear the stories told by teams of helpers from the congregation. School visits ended with a time doing craftwork in the hall - the kind of experience that children and adults too enjoy during our monthly Messy Church sessions (see worship).

The Knitted Bible was well reported on in the Northern Echo, and had a full page spread in the Wear Valley Mercury. The publicity gained brought many more people to the church on the Friday, when the Knitted Bible was on display for the public throughout the day. Superintendent minister Ann Shepherdson said at the end of the week "God has truly blessed this act of faith and mission".
